Outdoor Hot Tub Heating System in Thailand – Why It Matters for Expats
What It Really Means for You as a Buyer

Why the Heating System Is So Important
If you’re an expat living in Thailand and thinking about getting an outdoor hot tub, the heating system is one of the most important parts to look at, because it quietly controls almost everything you feel and pay for. It’s the hidden part that keeps the water at your ideal temperature, supports clean water, protects the equipment, and has a big impact on how reliable the hot tub is over many years. A well-designed heating system gives you comfortable soaking, better safety, easier maintenance, and more value from the electricity you use.
At Q&G, every outdoor hot tub we sell in Thailand comes with a Balboa™ hot water system from the USA, a brand used by leading spa manufacturers worldwide. Our system is designed to:
- Keep your spa at a stable temperature 24 hours a day
- Let you set the temperature up to 40°C, or to any warm level you find comfortable.
- Use smart sensors to protect the heater and pump
- Be easy for technicians to service and maintain over the long term
Overview of the Recirculating Hot Water System
Our outdoor hot tubs use a recirculating hot water system. This means:
- Water is drawn from the tub.
- It passes through the filter.
- It flows through the heater and ozone system.
- Clean, warm water returns to the tub.
The main components are:
- Heater tube (heater housing)
- Heating element (INCOLOY 3 kW)
- Dual sensor system (temperature + flow)
- Circulation pump
Each part is designed to give you
comfort, safety, and long service life.

1. Heater Tube – Strong, Leak-Resistant, and Efficient
The heater tube is the stainless-steel cylinder where the water is heated.
Key features
- Made from stainless steel, formed as one solid piece
- No welded joints, which helps prevent leaks
- Connects to the spa plumbing with 1.5-inch unions (large pipe size)
- Installed under the main control board for easy access
Benefits for you as a buyer
- Lower risk of leaks – one-piece stainless design reduces weak points.
- Better water flow – large 1.5" connections let water move smoothly, improving heating performance.
- Faster, more even heating – water passes through a larger chamber, helping the system reach and maintain your chosen temperature more efficiently.
- Easier and quicker service – technicians can check the heater and power supply easily, and replace parts without tearing the whole spa apart.
This design helps your outdoor hot tub stay
reliable, efficient, and easier to maintain
in the long term.

2. Heating Element – Efficient Heating with Low Running Cost
Inside the heater tube is the heating element, the part that actually warms the water.
Technical details
- Made from INCOLOY, an industrial-grade alloy
- Power rating: 3 kW
- Shaped to improve water flow inside the heater tube
- Fixed securely to the tube using strong hex nuts
For an average hot tub of around 1,000 litres, this 3 kW heater can raise the water temperature by about 2°C per hour. Some customers feel this is not “very fast”, and often ask if the hot tub can heat the water more quickly.
The important point is: this heater is not designed to be a “quick-boil” system after filling fresh water. It is designed to maintain the water at your chosen temperature 24 hours a day with low energy cost.
Once the hot tub reaches your target temperature (for example 38°C) and the cover is used correctly, the heater only needs to work to replace a small heat loss (maybe 0.5°C at a time). For this job, a 3 kW heater is more efficient and cheaper to run than a very large heater.
For example, a 15 kW heater could heat the water much faster than 3 kW when starting from cold. But after the hot tub is already at the target temperature, that 15 kW heater would cost much more per month to maintain the temperature than a 3 kW heater, for no extra comfort.
What this means for you
- Balanced heating and running cost – the system heats at a reasonable rate, but is optimised to keep your monthly electricity bill lower during everyday use.
- Long lifespan – INCOLOY resists corrosion and wear, ideal for hot water and Thailand’s warm, humid climate.
- Less risk of overheating – the element shape and position keep water flowing smoothly, reducing stress on both the heater and the pump.
- Leak-resistant assembly – secure mounting prevents movement from pump vibration, helping to avoid leaks at connection points.
The heater also comes with properly sized cables and locking connectors, so the electrical connection is:
- Stable
- Safe
- Less likely to loosen or be installed incorrectly
The result is a
safe, efficient heater designed for many years of low-cost use, especially when you keep the tub filled, covered, and at a steady temperature.

3. Dual Sensor System – Safety, Protection, and Stable Temperature
The sensor system is like the brain’s “senses” of your hot tub heating system.
It has two key jobs:
- Measure the water temperature.
- Measure the water flow rate through the heater.
Instead of using just one sensor like many older systems, our hot tubs use a dual sensor system.
Accurate Temperature Control
Benefit for you:You get a acomfortable and stable soaking temperature, with fewer sudden changes.
Flow Monitoring for Safety
Benefit for you:
Less risk of equipment damage
and fewer expensive repairs.

4. Circulation Pump – Quiet, Efficient, and Keeps Your Water Clean
our outdoor hot tub uses two types of pumps:
- A massage pump for strong water jets
- A circulation pump for quiet, continuous water movement
Here we focus on the circulation pump, as it works closely with the heating and water treatment systems.
What the circulation pump does
- Draws water from the tub through the filter
- Sends it through the heater to warm it
- Sends it through the ozone system to disinfect it
- Returns clean, warm water to the tub
The circulation pump runs automatically with the heating system, based on what the sensors detect.
Benefits for you
- Fully automatic – you simply choose the temperature; the system manages when the pump runs.
- Quiet operation – designed to run long hours without disturbing your home or neighbours.
- Lower energy use – smaller and more efficient than the massage pump, so it uses less electricity during heating and filtration cycles.
- Cleaner water every time it heats – whenever the circulation pump works, filtration and ozone disinfection also run.
Easy to Service and Replace
Benefits for you:
- Faster, cleaner pump replacement
- Lower labour costs
- Reduced risk of wiring mistakes
IP55 Protection – Built for Real Conditions
Benefits for you:
- Better durability in Thailand’s humid, sometimes wet environment
- Longer pump life
- Less chance of sudden failure due to moisture

FAQ
Do I really need warm water in Thailand?
Warm water (around 34–38°C) is still very beneficial in Thailand – it relaxes muscles and joints, relieves stress, improves blood circulation, and makes soaking comfortable on rainy days, cooler nights, or after exercise. If the weather feels too hot, you can simply set a lower temperature and enjoy it as a pleasantly warm plunge pool instead of a hot spa.
Is it expensive to run an outdoor hot tub in Thailand?
Based on our simulated user behaviour, the running cost is around THB 1,200 per month. This is calculated from using the hot tub 5 times per week, with the massage system on for about 1 hour each time, while the water temperature is maintained at the customer’s chosen setting 24 hours a day.
Actual costs may vary depending on your electricity rate, temperature setting, and usage.
Is it easy to maintain the heating system?
Yes. Just keep the filter clean, water level correct, and water chemistry balanced. The control panel will show an error if something is wrong. Do not open the heater or pump yourself – call a technician for internal repairs.
Will groundwater affect the heating system?
It can. Groundwater often has more minerals, iron, or sediment, which can cause scale or stains on the heater and inside pipes. If you use groundwater, we recommend pre-filtering it and checking water balance (pH and hardness) to protect the heating system and extend its life.
Is the system easy to service and repair?
The heater tube, heater, sensors, and circulation pump are designed for easy access, quick part replacement, and fewer wiring mistakes, which makes maintenance faster and simpler.
